THE ORIGINAL JIMMY'S JAWBREAKER - A History

The "Original" Jimmy's Jawbreaker was created by none other than the original Jimmy Mast himself. Jimmy's experience in the restaurant business began at the ripe old age of 19 when he ran a potato chip route by day and a hot dog stand at night. His first hot dog stand, bought with money borrowed from his parents, did not even have an entrance - - he had to crawl under the counter to enter. Eventually, the hot dog stand made him enough money to purchase land on Lincoln Avenue and build Jimmy's #1 Drive-In in 1953. Later, he sold out to June and it became known as June's Drive-In; and NO, Jimmy was NOT married to June!

Then in the late 1950's, Jimmy built, using all his own original ideas, Jimmy's #2 on Memorial Drive, known then as "The Strip". That generation of kids could probably write their own histories of the drive-in; just ask Jimmy's son, Nick Mast. It was a place to take their dates or the whole family for some good wholesome fun and food. How many of you met your future spouse at Jimmy's, which was located where Monroe Muffler and Brake now sits. As the restaurant's popularity grew, teletrays and carhops were introduced. Jimmy married one of his carhops, Gloria Jean, who lived in Logan at the time and drove to and from work each day. Jimmy and Gloria produced two more Masts, Jamie and Mark.

Later, things "progressed", with chain restaurants and "new wave" ideas coming to town. Jimmy sold out, leaving Lancaster with a sandwich the Public had made famous. Jimmy and Gloria ventured into other avenues of the food service business, opening Diamond Jim's Pizza, Big Jim's Truck Stop, seafood restaurants and catering at the Estate Golf Course. They invested money in things they felt would pay off later, and that it did! Almost 30 years after Jimmy's #2 sold, the sandwich made its modern day debut when their daughter, Jamie, brought back the legend of the "Original" Jimmy's Jawbreaker at the 1989 Fairfield County Fair in Lancaster, sponsoring a gospel group fundraiser. During the 6-day fair, the Jawbreaker did a whopping sales number of 8,000 sandwiches!!

Since then, Lancaster has accepted, supported and encouraged Jamie to go on with the sandwich and to continue on from where her mom and dad had left off. With the encouragement and input of her brother Mark, she bought and opened the concession trailer you saw during the '90s at the fairs and festivals.

The "Original" Jimmy's Jawbreaker still consists of 2 all-beef patties, still supplied by Bay's Food Market on Maple Street. Bay's is the last butcher and packing house left in Fairfield County, so we DO KNOW WHERE OUR MEAT COMES FROM! The patties are grilled to perfection, topped with real American cheese, crisp green lettuce, home grown tomatoes, plus Jimmy's secret sauce. served on a freshly grilled 5" sesame seed bun. Every ingredient used today  is delivered fresh daily. The cooked sauce is a recipe from Jimmy's mother, Marie, and has been passed on to Jamie, who is humbled by each and every order that you give her.

Only fresh potatoes are used in making Jamie's fabulous French fries, which are hand cut before your very eyes. The fries are cooked in Canola oil, and we cook only fries in our fryers, nothing else. All sauces for French fry toppings are made fresh in-house. We pride ourselves in serving real food with little or no preservatives. Believe it or not - - even the kids of today can taste the difference!

Jimmy passed away in October 1997. Although he left no fortune to Jamie, he did leave her the opportunity to make a good living and to pass down a legacy for her children, Dacia and Brant, and her grandchildren.

Jamie would like to extend a special thank you to the local suppliers who deliver the fresh products daily;
- Bay's Packing House (Rt 188) & Bay's Food Market (301 S. Maple St)
- Heiner's Bakery (daily baked buns)
- Carnival Foods (fresh produce)

Moving and maintaining the trailer would be difficult with Jamie's husband, Ric with a "c"

Many have called the "Original Jimmy's Jawbreaker the greatest sandwich in the world. It is truly the sandwich that Lancaster made famous.
